Spanish Power Positioning
Spanish Power positioning comes from the weekly MiFID II Article 58 position report that the trading venue files and ESMA republishes in its register, which splits open interest into investment funds, investment firms and credit institutions, other financial institutions, commercial undertakings and operators with compliance obligations. It shows who holds the open interest each week and which way they lean, the EU counterpart of the CFTC's Commitments of Traders report.
What drives Spanish Power positioning
Solar is the leading technology in the Spanish generation fleet, and together with wind and hydro it supplies most of the country's output. Wholesale prices swing with renewable production, dropping in windy and sunny spells and recovering when that supply fades. Limited export capacity keeps much of the surplus inside the Iberian market, which lets Spanish prices move apart from the main continental markets. Commercial undertakings are utilities, renewable producers and industrial buyers hedging that volatility, while investment funds trade the weather and the spread to French power.
How to read Spanish Power positioning
Read Spanish Power positioning against its own history: where the investment-fund net sits in its 52-week and 3-year range, and whether commercial hedgers lean the other way. Read an extreme against the season, because strong spring and summer solar output can push hedgers into positions that look stretched but follow normal renewable patterns.
This is the Spanish baseload future on EEX. Read it with French Power to see whether positioning reflects an Iberian renewable story or a wider continental move across the Pyrenees.
COTInsight scores Spanish Power every week on the layers that do not need a price: the 52-week z-score, the 3-year COT Index, the regime classifier, momentum and streak, the open-interest trend, concentration, and the positioning cycle. There is no price series for this contract, so no divergence flag and no outcome statistics.
