Italian Power Positioning

Italian Power positioning comes from the weekly MiFID II Article 58 position report that the trading venue files and ESMA republishes in its register, which splits open interest into investment funds, investment firms and credit institutions, other financial institutions, commercial undertakings and operators with compliance obligations. It shows who holds the open interest each week and which way they lean, the EU counterpart of the CFTC's Commitments of Traders report.

What drives Italian Power positioning

Gas-fired plants set the marginal price in most Italian hours, which ties Italian power closely to the gas market. That link makes the PSV gas hub and the availability of gas plants central to how hedgers position. Commercial undertakings are generators and suppliers locking in the margin between fuel costs and power sales. Investment funds trade the structural premium that Italian power carries over French and Spanish power.

How to read Italian Power positioning

Read Italian Power positioning against its own history: where the investment-fund net sits in its 52-week and 3-year range, and whether commercial hedgers lean the other way. When an extreme appears, check whether gas positioning at PSV moved the same way, since a shared move points to a gas story rather than a power one.

This is the Italian baseload future on EEX. Read it with Italian PSV Gas, because the gas hub sets much of the cost base for Italian generation, and the two books together show whether funds are trading power or the fuel behind it.

COTInsight scores Italian Power every week on the layers that do not need a price: the 52-week z-score, the 3-year COT Index, the regime classifier, momentum and streak, the open-interest trend, concentration, and the positioning cycle. There is no price series for this contract, so no divergence flag and no outcome statistics.
