Swiss Power Positioning
Swiss Power positioning comes from the weekly MiFID II Article 58 position report that the trading venue files and ESMA republishes in its register, which splits open interest into investment funds, investment firms and credit institutions, other financial institutions, commercial undertakings and operators with compliance obligations. It shows who holds the open interest each week and which way they lean, the EU counterpart of the CFTC's Commitments of Traders report.
What drives Swiss Power positioning
Hydropower supplies the largest share of Swiss electricity and nuclear most of the rest, so water availability and plant uptime shape the forward curve. Switzerland can export power over a full year yet remains a net importer in winter, when hydro output drops and supply comes mainly from France and Germany. That seasonal swing makes winter delivery the focus for hedgers. Commercial undertakings are Swiss utilities and traders that manage storage hydro against neighbouring markets, while investment funds trade the winter premium and the link to German and French power.
How to read Swiss Power positioning
Read Swiss Power positioning against its own history: where the investment-fund net sits in its 52-week and 3-year range, and whether commercial hedgers lean the other way. Read an extreme against the season, because hedging for winter delivery carries more weight in a hydro system that leans on imports in the cold months.
This is the Swiss baseload future on EEX. Compare it with German Power and French Power, the main sources of Swiss winter imports, to see whether a move is driven by Swiss water supply or by its neighbours.
COTInsight scores Swiss Power every week on the layers that do not need a price: the 52-week z-score, the 3-year COT Index, the regime classifier, momentum and streak, the open-interest trend, concentration, and the positioning cycle. There is no price series for this contract, so no divergence flag and no outcome statistics.
